I was first introduced to Polident when I was in high school. I wore retainers, which I cleaned everyday by scrubbing with my toothbrush and some toothpaste. Apparently, that was not good enough, as my retainers began to grow mold. Yuck! My parents did not have money growing on trees. After all that expensive orthodontic work, I needed to use my retainers. I didn't have money to buy new ones, so I tried Polident. It worked like magic. The mold magically disappeared. I have been a convert ever since.
The other day, I caught my husband trying to clean his retainers by soaking them in vinegar. I told him to use Polident, which he refused, saying vinegar will do the trick. Of course, it didn't. The retainers and their case were pretty disgusting with who-knows-what growing inside. He came back to get Polident and his retainers are now good as new.
I have found other uses for Polident, as well. The hamster's water bottle can get slimy, even with frequent water changes. A bottle brush doesn't reach all nooks and crannies. In goes the Polident and they've got a fresh, clean water bottle.
The newer Polident works much faster than before, not that it took very long back then anyway. Three minutes. Just soak my retainers as I'm brushing and flossing my teeth and they are done. They always taste nice and fresh and are never moldy.
