I've tried several at home bite guards. The ones you boil are huge on me and I can't talk or even close my mouth.I've got a relatively small mouth and sensitive gums so I first tried the low profile version. While it was far more comfortable than the boiled variety, I seemed to chew through them in no time.
I have since switched to the regular style which rubs my gums and the inside of my cheek a little, but seems much sturdier. In general, this is my bite guard of choice. It's pretty affordable (shop around, there are deals to be had) allows me to hold a conversation with my partner, and is relatively discrete, at least compared to others I've tried.On the down side, it still chafes my mouth a little, the mint flavor only lasts for a couple weeks and really doesn't taste that good to start with and because the pad is only covering some of my teeth, it puts irregular pressure on the teeth which tends to make my mouth a little more sore the next day.Still, I'll take this over any other option I've found.
