While this obviously can be used on our canine friends, it can also be used effectively for human teeth, especially the anterior lower teeth. In humans, the front teeth, especially the back sides of these teeth commonly get a build-up of plaque and tartar. Once the tartar forms, it can only be removed by a scaling instrument. Brushing and flossing will not remove tartar. So, if you are one that gets a build-up of tartar, and want to remove it yourself, this is the instrument that will do the job. You will need a good light, perhaps a dental mirror, and have to do this while watching your hands in front of the bathroom mirror. The tartar is engaged by the blade end by inserting the instrument below the gumline and resting on the root surface of the tooth. The scaler is then swept upward, with even pressure, removing the tartar. Several strokes are usually required to remove the tartar. Not everyone can do this (what with the working backwards in a mirror), so this is only for those appropriately motivated and skilled to do so. If you are not sure of how to do this, wait and have your dental hygienist remove the tartar.
If you decide to purchase this for your own use, make sure you do not let anyone else use it, as it takes sterilization between uses to remove the germs and pathogens that will be left on the blade after use. Bloodborne illnesses (Hepatitis B, C, and HIV) are transmitted by blood. DO NOT SHARE THIS INSTRUMENT WITH OTHERS. After each use, wipe it with alcohol, and perhaps for further disinfection, it can be placed in the dishwasher on the disinfect cycle.
